The Twentieth Anniversary Celebration
The special Twentieth Anniversary Program of the Burton Awards was held on May 20, 2019 at the palatial Library of Congress. John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, was interviewed by David G. Leitch, Global General Counsel of Bank of America. Tye G. Darland, Senior Vice President – General Counsel and Secretary for Georgia-Pacific LLC, was distinguished as the Honorary Dinner Chair for the 2019 program. The Honorable Robert A. Katzmann, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, was awarded the Twentieth Anniversary Innovation in Law Award. An exciting rapid fire debate on the “Constitutionality/Legality of the President’s Declaration of a National Emergency to Justify Construction of a Wall at the Southern Border” was held featuring Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., Former Solicitor General of the United States and Partner and Founder of the Washington, D.C., Office of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, and Michael A. Carvin, Partner at Jones Day. Teresa L. Jennings, Head of Rule of Law Development at LexisNexis Legal & Professional and Vice President & Treasurer at LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation spoke on the Rule of Law. The new Twentieth Anniversary Outstanding Achievements in Law Award was presented to Kenneth R. Feinberg. Captain Lia Reynolds was honored for her public service in the military; Noory Bechor received the first ever Technology Advancement in Law Award; James A. Kohm was recognized for his public service in the Government for his Executive leadership; and Candace K. Beinecke received an award for law firm leadership. The event concluded with an engrossing performance by America’s Got Talent worldwide winner, magician Shin Lim, and Tony Award winner and star of Disney’s Frozen, the spectacular Idina Menzel.
