The Highest Standard of Excellence
On May 21, 2018, the annual Burton Awards event was held at the Library of Congress. The program featured a special interview with Dr. Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations. He spoke on five separate segments on the rule of law and current foreign affairs issues in North Korea, China, Syria, Russia, and Iran. Haben Girma, the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School, and a leading advocate for the disabled, was another special guest speaker. An intriguing debate on “Gerrymandering: The Death Knell of Our Democracy?” was held featuring Tucker Carlson, host of Tucker Carlson Tonight on FOX, and Paul Smith. James Rishwain was given the Law Firm Leadership Award. Mark Wojcik was chosen for his contribution to legal writing education; Duane Wall and White & Case received the highest honor for a law firm; Lieutenant Colonel Veronique N. DeRouselle was recognized for her public service in the Military; and Thomas A. Mariani and Epin Hu Christensen were acknowledged for their public service in the Government. The evening concluded with a spectacular performance by Broadway star Megan Hilty.
